Q: Is DNAConnect.Org setting up another database for DNA?
A: No. DNAConnect.Org's purpose is to provide adoptive families the DNA kits used by the dominant DNA testing labs collect DNA of anyone they meet in China who may be a birth parent to an adoptee, either their own or of another family. All DNA sent to DNAConnect.Org will be submitted to a large DNA lab for inclusion in their data base, with all testing expenses being paid for by DNAConnect.Org. Since adoptive families pay only the postage to send the DNA samples back to DNAConnect.Org, there is no reason for adoptive families not to collect samples from any birth parent they meet in China (other countries may be added soon).

Q: If I financially support DNAConnect.Org, what benefits will I receive?
A: Primarily, you will be part of a wonderful experiment that will hopefully benefit thousands of Chinese adoptees. As the number of DNA samples submitted to the database increases, sibling and birth parent matches will occur, providing searching adoptees and their families immense benefit.
Additionally, by supporting DNAConnect.Org, you will become part of the DNAConnect.Org "family." This will allow you to receive information on any matches made to you or your child's DNA collected by DNAConnect.Org for no cost. This has the potential of saving your family thousands of hours of searching, and thousands of dollars in travel and other search-related expenses.

Q: What if a match is made to my child and I haven't supported DNAConnect.Org in the past? Will there be a charge for me to get the contact information for my child?
A: Yes. Currently, if one of our birth parents matches your child, the fee would be $399 if you have not contributed to the project in the past (this amount may change at any time in the future). These funds are used only to purchase additional kits for more testing. Considering the cost of a search, this fee is extremely affordable and results in tremendous savings to you in searching expenses.

Q: Will a birth family be able to find me or my child without my permission?
A: No. DNAConnect.Org will serve as a "firewall" between you/your family and any DNA matches. The choice to make contact will be strictly yours.

Q: Who will maintain the contact information for birth parents and siblings inside China and the other sending countries?
A: DNAConnect.Org will have country specialists who speak the language and are familiar with communication opportunities in each sending country. These specialists will make periodic contact with all individuals from whom DNA is collected, to insure that contact will be able to be made once a match is achieved.

Q: Why is Research-China.Org developing this new service?
A: Over the past five years that Research-China.Org has been performing birth parent searches in China, we have met the birth families of dozens of children not in our search projects. The high cost of DNA testing prevented us from collecting samples from these birth families. Additionally, we recognize that more and more adoptive families are hiring other searchers to also locate birth families, and no doubt they will also locate birth families of other adoptees. To make it so that these opportunities are not lost, Research-China.Org is launching this service.

Q: Is this service limited to China, or can adoptive families from other sending countries also participate?
A: We hope to have the support of adoptive families from all over the world, but at this time only DNA from China will be accepted. Once we have worked out all the kinks inherent in a project such as this, we will recruit specialists from other programs and allow those countries to join the service. Ultimately we hope to have world-wide participation.
